Once on a best flexible rate, I was contacted by the hotel via email a month out to say I needed to update my reservation with a different card in order to keep it. That was understandable since I hadn’t given anything, maybe a 1 night deposit.

Your situation sounds more like an IT glitch and it would have been interesting to see if anyone noticed it upon check in. As long as it still showed under Upcoming Reservations, I would have ridden it for as long as possible. Good for you for being honest, lol.
