If any housekeeping is working, it could surely be returned to inventory by 11 PM or so.
Even if they’re not, it would be ready for them to clean as soon as they arrive in the morning and thus available for early check in.
I would certainly consider it a “favor” to the hotel, and agree it is silly to not get the night credit. I’m sure they’d rather one do that than for example request a 4PM late checkout and not inform them if they left prior to that.
