Swedes make something similar called glögg. I, the American, have been making it for eight years now to rave reviews (from both Swedes and Americans).
This year was my biggest batch to date: 15 litres of white wine, 3-4 lbs of brown sugar, 3-4 lbs of white sugar, lots of spices, and 3 litres of vodka. Not overly sweet with a nice spice kick.
I allocated 18 500ml bottles to be distributed to neighbors and friends (with a custom bottle label and a pretty bow), and the rest to be consumed by guests and family when they enter our house this winter.
