I know that SYD is very challenging but interested in SCL or Japan or to Europe or anyplace interesting. Expert advice is always appreciated.

There is no hard and fast rule that says cities X, Y, & Z always clear while A, B, & C never do. Even the toughest routes will have space on off days and the seemingly easier routes can be tough on busy days. DFW-HKG and LAX-SYD are the notoriously difficult ones, however I've cleared both many times.
The best advice, for all routes across AA's network, is to fly midweek. Your chances will increase tenfold. That, and be strategic about picking your flights. If you're flying to Tokyo and have a choice between the early DFW-NRT flights that's showing 75% full in J compared to the later flight which is only 30%, pick the later one. Just common sense stuff.
