There are, there are airline service desks, and they can handle it at the gate as well. But the earlier point of asking is probably better from an availability perspective
Can you believe I actually forgot about the service desks at the boarding gates. I must be getting older than I thought in retirement considering that I used to fly home every couple of weeks from engineering projects I worked on for years. In fact, I used to have priority status and got upgraded just about every time at those very boarding gates.
