In my understanding, "Y" is something of a subclass - usually indicating a higher trim level of a particular vehicle or a vehicle that is in limited supply (ie Honda, Subaru).

The "Y" is how Hertz could claim you're getting a free upgrade(!) even though they're just tossing you a higher trim level in the same class.
I think the "Y" classification is slowly being taken away. The last Y anything I got was in June with a traverse. Maybe it's because Hertz has started investing in higher trim levels with certain brands. Like the 2019 Altima SL is just "F" now.
Or I could be because they've made new classes.
