Amex/Aeroplan Membership Rewards transfers

Those of us with Amex cards, of the regular variety at least, have started receiving a four-page T&C with our monthly statements. This sets out the new terms as they relate primarily to the addition of Aeroplan to the program. Major point, which has been alluded to in the past, but may not have sunk in, is that NOT ALL MR POINTS CAN BE TRANSFERRED TO AEROPLAN.

MR points are now categorized by their source, so those earned from charges made on Amex Charge Cards -- the old OPTIMA, the COMPANION, and others that don't have the "pay in full" option -- cannot be used for transfer into Aeroplan accounts. However, there is no indication on monthly statements to indicate which MR points are segregated in which tier -- yes, there are now tiers to MR -- though this is recorded with the points earned in the immediate preceding month. I suppose this was a requirement of CIBC so they could hold onto exclusivity in the Charge Card realm [though the charge card version of Diners|enRoute could accumulate Aeroplan miles because it was grandfathered in from the old standalone enRoute days].

When I called to check my account, it seems almost all my points were considered eligible, I suspect based on my having already used most of those earned on the COMPANION and OPTIMA cards over the past few years.

It takes a few days to register one's Aeroplan number with MR, then about a week to transfer points. So expect two weeks overall for the process.

Anyhow, that's an update on the Amex front.
