Why would you change to Preferred, which earns 1x TYP everywhere, when the AT&T More (free) version earns 2x on the same "online" purchases that the More card earns 2x at, and then 1x everywhere
else. I see no advantage to the Preferred over the free AT&T More.
Meanwhile, why do you keep the same card number? If it's for 24-month issue, currently the TYP cards don't have an language saying that opening or closing an AT&T card resets a clock. So converting to a Preferred would risk resetting your TYP 24-month clock, but converting to the free A&T More card wouldn't.
So that seems like two reasons to convert to A&T More rather than to TYP Preferred.
(Note; Citi just reintroduced the non-TYP Diamond Preferred card, so to avoid confusion with that, that's why I keep sticking "TYP" in front of "Preferred".)
