danpeake's $12,000 spend will earn at least 12,000 points plus $200.
After meeting the min spnd on new cards, and some of the spend on existing cards where the ROI is worth it, I don't have $12K in natural spend left to do
In fact my natural spend is much more than maxed out. It will then cost me @$168 in fees to MS the $12 spend.
Math was never a strong point for me, so maybe someone can check my calculations:
If Citi keeps my Citi Gold AF for the Prestige at $350, and I get the $250 travel statement credit, and the $200 spend credit, it ends up costing me $68 in MS fees to get those 12K points. But if as rumored Citi ups my AF to the full $450, now it costs me $168 to get the 12K points. But of course I still get to keep the card open for Prestige card benefits.
AF (-$350), MS (-$168), travel statement credit +$250, $12K spend statement credit +200 = (-$68)
AF (-$450). MS (-$168), travel statement credit +$250, $12K spend statement credit +200 = (--$168)
So it would cost me either $68, or $168, to get the 12K points, and of course to keep the card open for benefits like the top level Priority Pass membership, etc.
And since I spend a month in Europe every year, the 5X points for International restaurant spend that starts in Jan will really add up as well.
If my AF stays at $350, it's probably worth it to me to keep it open. If the AF goes to $450, probably not.
Thoughts?....
