On some vehicles the built-in gps has a line that grows shorter or longer, which is very useful, versus 1 mile, 1000 feet, 500 feet (and 1000 feet isn't even close to 1/2 a mile because of the stupid US system).
It does it every time right near here. I think it's better than giving a distance as there's no way to misinterpret it.
