As others have mentioned, the person staying on the plane needs to be the "full fare" passenger. If they are booked as the "companion fare" and you are not with them, they won't be able to fly. I'm pretty sure I've seen a person pulled off a plane after being seated for this. It was a little hard to hear the discussion but the GA kept mentioning companion fare and relative terms, and the person indicated they were traveling alone.
