I think it is the non-U.S. citizen factor. Whenever I travel in the US with my husband (I'm a U.S. citizen, he's not - we're both QF elite FF'ers), he, without fail, gets the SSSS. I get nothing and wait for him on the other side. This also happens to me when I'm travelling with Australian or British work colleagues in the U.S. (i.e. they get it, I don't), so I always thought non-citizens got the SSSS automatically.
