I've had flights that literally went from 3+ hours delayed to "Boarding begins in 10 minutes". It depends on the cause for the delay. Mechanical delays can be side-stepped by the airline swapping in a different aircraft to operate the flight. Ditto swapping crews to fix crew delays. It pays not to wander off too far while waiting out such delays.
