As long as you keep them out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources, they last quite a long while. AA's self-service checkin machines were fitted with the flimsy paper from the start, and I still have some boarding passes from them that are at least a couple years old and still perfectly readable.

As was previously mentioned, the old BP's were thermal sensitive, also - just on a different paper stock.
