I've done Air Tahiti Nui with stopover ex AKL and ex-LAX. The new Air Tahiti 787-9 looks like a huge improvement over the old planes, if you can get on that. If not, it would be a long flight on an old aircraft. Due to flight times and how fantastic Tahiti and Moorea are, make sure your stopover is at least 4 days.

Only complaint from me about Air Tahiti service was that cabin crew went on strike during my stay and most TN flights were canceled. Unexpected bonus: 2 nights and meals comped at the Intercontinental during the strike. Unexpected minus: came within an hour of missing the wedding I was flying back to the US for.
