After growing up as an airline brat, I too followed that school of thought when I started paying for tickets. The "nonrev uniform" of khakis, pressed polo shirt and polished shoes was too much of a giveaway though. I found that FAs on board would skip me over for meal choices, gate agents would ask me to stand to the side when I approached them etc... all under the assumption that I was nonrevving. Of course it also worked the other way on occasion. Still, I had to make a conscious decision to start wearing jeans on planes a few years ago and it took me an entire year before I was entirely comfortable with it. I still cannot bring myself to wear shorts though. Some things are just drilled into your head too deep!
