You're right on all points (it was a 16J sCO), and I guess it's a reasonable overall capacity swap. I'm just surprised to see anything other than a 752 or 772 on this route, especially on a redeye (though of course these Y seats are no worse than the 10-across 772s.)
Of course the first thing that comes to mind is that they were short a 757 at the origin. However it's also possible they were short 757-qualifed pilots, and had a reserve crew and spare 737 airplane.
