Not always. The legacies block out a big chunk of the front of the plane for elites only. Sometimes it depends on how the non-elite books the ticket. On Alaska, I bought a ticket for my son and was able to purchase an upgraded seat for him. But we got the return ticket on points, and no upgrade/elite seats were available at any price. (yes, I verified that there were dozens of seats still available for an elite with an award ticket). The legacy airlines have made everything so complex that no wonder the average American flyer (non-Road Warrior) prefers the relative simplicity of Southwest.

I mean except for the OP, of course.
