I'd still try seeing if they'll check it through but don't be surprised if they flat out say no (and have a plan to deal with that likely outcome). On a side note, during check in you may want to see if you can do a same day change to reduce the layover time. You may also want to check with United now to see if there's anything they could do (they've known to be flexible at times!).

Yes, that's very helpful, thank you! When I booked this I hoped there would be a schedule change that would allow us to improve on this itinerary, but it didn't happen. We'll have a rental car, so it's a minor inconvenience.
If we attempt to SDC, will they consider LAX the same origin?

I don't know, my opinion - I'd be really worried about not having control of my bag for so long and if it got lost in the shuffle and really made it on the plane - especially if going overseas. It just seems high risk. I personally would not have high confidence my bag makes it for such a long time.
This is a good point - not UA, but last summer after a 17 hour connection in YYZ (where I didn't even have the option to access our bags), only one of our two bags accompanied us to Spain and it took nine days to get the second one.
