Gone are the days where you can approach the podium and ask if F is checked in full, in hopes of the GA telling you that you have a chance. It's still a possibility with misconnects, but I think digging into that requires additional steps on their part, whereas unclaimed was an easy indicator.
You are not automatically checked-in, despite what DL marketing wants to say.
Actually checking-in still requires launching the mobile app and acknowledging a pop-up notification, or using a traditional kiosk/agent. If you do not open the app, or close out of the notification, or have a trip ineligible for mobile check-in, or simply don't have/use a smartphone, you will not be checked-in. In fact, I frequently access the app on day-of-travel and close out of the check-in process because I might want to SDC later on, and it's faster for an agent to process an SDC if they don't have to un-check you from your original flight first.
