Who cares what AA is doing - perhaps testing dynamic pricing like Delta uses.

But you don't "soak up inventory" by handing out 9k miles in the summer, you do it by running reward discounts such as this one, running double or triple miles promos on paid flights (incentivising longer flights or more expensive fares), etc.
