Morning all just after a bit of advice as have researched it and checked other forums but cannot seem to get a clear answer

Last month we were flying from Melbourne to Birmingham with a connection in Dubai for 2 hours, we boarded the connection flight and there was a technical issue so didn't move for 3 hours. We then took off and the landing gear would not come up so we had to burn fuel and land back in Dubai. We then were put up overnight in the Emirates Copthorne hotel and brought back to the airport the next day for the new flight. Overall our connection time was 21 hours instead of 2. Reading online the EU261 case which was successful was a departure from the UK and my scenario is a flight outside the EU with an airline not from the EU but our destination was in the EU. I have had email correspondence with Emirates and have been initially offered 40K sky miles for each passenger, which aren't really of any use to us, so I'm wondering whether I should mention about the EU261 yet and request for the max amount for each of us (600 euro).
