We have 3 kids and I've pretty much always searched rooms for 5 on SPG.com. It's never been a problem with extra fees for the kids, at least without some very clear explanation or obvious rationale (e.g. a room w/ 2DB + Sofa costs a bit more than just 2DB). My gut feel based on related observation to date is that the OP has stumbled upon a change for the worse.
