I think we'd have had far more uproar here on FT if any confirmed revenue F pax could simply displace any upgraded F pax during the slightest of IRROPS. As it stands, based on my understanding F pax who are IRROPS'd onto a flight that is full up front end up on the PALL list as DSR and therefore have highest priority for any F seat that becomes available.
Edit: my understanding above applies to pax who receive complimentary EXP/PRO or 500-mile upgrades, not those who have confirmed instrument upgrades, who AA treat (or should treat) as confirmed F pax for all intents and purposes.
Not to be the bearer of bad news, but it happens even to revenue pax ticketed directly into premium cabins and options can be somewhat limited as D0 approaches. Same-model equipment swaps with various premium cabin configurations were the genesis of a number of FT threads post-merger.
