On many trains they do not even need a ticket, they can just insert their id card in the ticket reader to access the platform.
Saw my MIL use this last month. Looked quite handy.

Wouldn't be worth the bother in my case. I'll just hope that the passport option or genuine e-ticketing becomes widely available.
