Agreed. And that not the case in Y medium-haul as well. Countless times, I have seen the cabin filling up on the app and when there are 10-15 seats remaining, the middle one close to me is taken while there are others still available. TBH, may be they do this when they know there won't be any seat left but I am not 100% sure.
This would be a cheap and quick nice improvement on the EU flights front. One small upfront IT cost to implement and a big gain for high revenues pax.
Personally having a free seat next to me is what makes the difference between being able to work or getting a back pain twisting my back so my shoulders fit on both sides.
