I don't see what's complicated about it. Premium cabins earn you more SC than economy, long haul flying earns you more SC than shorter flights. The tier thresholds are actually pretty low, given basically any international flight you do into/out of Australia is going to be long haul.

If travelling in business ot 1st on Qantas it is easy to attain status - long haul discount economy (especially on partners) does not earn much at all
Fly to London in Discount Economy on BA and earn 35 SCs one way - takes 10 r/ts to attain gold status - hardly a low threshold - have to fly on Qantas to get 70 SCs for the journey
Flying to Doha,, a whole 20SCs one way
