There are several routings that DL & partners can make work in two segments, aside from the very obvious JNB-ATL-DTW. JNB-ATL/AMS/CDG/FCO/LHR-DTW.

I asked for the JNB -ATL-DTW but they would not do it without charging me the difference in skymiles. And right now JNB to ATL is like 475,000 miles per person. Unmmm not worth it. I got the GRU to DTW flight for 94,000 points. (Which is still a lot for a one way reward). The only options out of GRU on Delta metal is ATL or JFK. ATL for me.
