There are several routings that DL & partners can make work in two segments, aside from the very obvious JNB-ATL-DTW. JNB-ATL/AMS/CDG/FCO/LHR-DTW.
It is 2 tickets on 2 different airlines. Delta gave me 10,000 miles for a the connection thru Atlanta.
