Sorry to hear you weren't given the option of a refund. Had you previously made changes to the reservation as ymx mentioned? If the reservation was never changed, it could be worth a call to customer service to straighten it out.

Last night I canceled flights I'd booked on points for two family members. I was given the usual option of requesting a refund or holding for future use, and did not receive any error messages upon choosing a refund.
