A 22" bag is 6-8 days worth. To Europe, 2 pair of shoes (wearing one), all black pants and sweaters, couple white shirts, tees for the summer, long sleeve for the winter. I think you're taking this a bit too personally, but with a 17" roller how much extra stuff do you think you have room for on the return?
I thought this went without saying, but "too big" isn't a judgement of your bag's absolute dimensions. It's more a matter of the tool for the job.
In any case, if you have lots of excess capacity, regardless of what size your bag is, you could have taken something smaller.
