Part of the problem is that these short connections are more prominent and automatically offered by phone agents and TAs. Often there are other options that give a more comfortable connection time, but delta.dumb always thinks the "best match" is as close to MCT as possible. When I book by phone--for example to use GUCs--I always insist that the agent tell me arrival and departure times at each connecting airport so that I can use my own best judgment about what will work regardless of what they say. Some phone agents clearly consider this to be a pain and think all I need to know are the arrival and departure times for origin and destination, not details of what carrier/aircraft/connecting airport etc.
