My opinion is that you wouldn't have anything to worry about by cancelling after the first year; I - and many others - have done same without repercussion.
The person who chronicled their bonus clawbacks was pretty clear that he thought the amount of MS, specifically at GCM, was the reason. Additionally, that person had called into retention in an attempt to secure further offers on each card, prior to closing them. (So human eyes on the account.)
The general consensus on the other forum is that the MS is what caused the clawbacks.
