You're correct. I think that poster is confusing the difference between a regular schedule change (which you do have to accept) and one that causes a connection to become illegal (which they automatically rebook you on, in this case for the later flight).
There is no way to "take your chances" as he said in this situation. The only option is to standby for the earlier (original) flight if they clear customs and make it to the gate in time, which is always possible.
*Edited to add: or the 2nd option previously mentioned, request a refund and book another ticket on a different carrier.
