Nov 2018 Trip Report
Stayed here for one night, and at the Castle Hilton for three. Two adults, two children. Diamond. Booked two rooms.
Overall, very impressed with this hotel. Perhaps surprisingly, it was about 40 Euros more, per night, than the Castle Hilton, but since US Thanksgiving, the Castle was full and I appreciated the chance to stay on two different sides of the city.
I note the complaints about the location (busy street etc, no intersection crossings) upthread, but we taxi'd in and out, so no issues. Close to station. Fun to be right next to a mall. I like looking at malls when traveling, even if only briefly, to get a sense of what's there. Starbucks is a few stores down from the hotel entrance in the mall, which might be of note to those who want their coffee a certain way. I found all over Budapest the coffee was weak and lukewarm, so I enjoyed a flat white from the Starbucks. Anyway, onto the hotel review.
Checked in around 2am owing to late plane. Upgraded two standard rooms to two suites. Mild misunderstanding in that they'd misunderstood my "quiet room, far from elevator" and given me one close to an elevator, changed it to a regular room that was quiet. No problem for me, I didn't need an upgrade to two suites for one short night. Switch was made speedily and helpfully,. Nice staff at checkin.
Rooms: Some sort of wine, soft drinks and a plate of cakes in both rooms, nice touch. Rooms were nice, modern, well-equipped, plenty of sockets, lights, mirrors, space. Comfortable beds, Good blackout curtains.
Restaurant: Family took breakfast, I opted for more sleep. They enjoyed it without raving about it.
Exec lounge: They also stopped in here for coffee and reported it small and well equipped.
Check-out: Big language-based misunderstanding with checkout person who insisted on charging me a day rate for the use of the lounge. I told her it was a Hilton Diamond benefit. She insisted I should sign the bill (in HUF and a bit incomprehensible). Asked for manager, and got someone who explained the term day rate was being used because it was their way of describing the nightly rate for the room, because we'd checked in after midnight, and the exec lounge was included. Ok, but maybe check-out person could use a bit of help in realizing this might confuse people. Nice, friendly manager.
Communication: Because I had booked two rooms, front desk corresponded with me before my stay to check this was right and find out if they could do anything for us. This was a lovely touch, and I commend this hotel on how helpful all their staff were. With the one exception of the check-out agent, they couldn't do enough for you. Quite different from our experience with the exec lounge staff at the Castle Hilton.
Overall: Recommend this Hilton, on the Pest side and close by trains etc. Modern, clean, super-helpful staff and great rooms.
