With the exception of the check-in area, TBIT is as modern and nice as any US airport terminal that I've been to and it has great dining and shopping options.
Also, OP hasn't mentioned what airline he's taking, but the Star Alliance lounge at LAX is pretty nice if traveling on e.g. NZ in business class. I'm personally not a fan of spending crazy long layovers in airport lounges though, regardless of how nice they are.
