Looks like people did select them who aren't medallion status to be able to sit closer to the front.

You could pick open aisles and windows in two of these neighboring rows and bet/hope that the poor kettle stuck in the middle seat will be eager to switch with you for either the aisle or window, whichever is most convenient for your family.
