While I can't speak to the International Terminal at LAX, the rest of the airport, in many ways, is dismal and even decrepit in spots.

IAH has lots of lounge options and lots of decent shopping and restaurants. All connected by airside train (unlike LAX where you need a decoder ring to figure out which terminals you can move airside between).
