Can you remember the old paper tickets? You will recall they only had space for 4 rows of flights, with a box underneath for the destination of the 4th flight. Digitally that lives on with sequential ticket numbers which relate to the PTO on those old tickets. So flight 5 would be on a separate paper ticket, but one number on from flight 4.
I might be old enough to have flown on those, but would not have been the responsible party at the time [and didn't fly much either]. Makes sense though, and I assume it'll be an interesting day around here if/when someone gets up the courage to actually implement clean-sheet replacements for these systems.
