Is it worth it? Only need 1800 miles to 25K, but $1200 short on Dollars

I was going to do a miles run to get the additional 1800 miles, but then learned about the Dollar requirement, which they did not have when I used to fly all the time before.

I might do about 5-8 flights next year, some might not even be on American Airlines, since I fly out of LAX, and it isn't a hub.

So is it worth spending the $1200 money for me to get Gold status?
