A close friend booked a last minute trip using AMEX Pay with Points to book a ticket on AA to rush across the country after his father took a turn for the worse (cancer) and now will pass away shortly.
He wants to move his return trip to a later date (already flew outbound). Will AA waive the change fee and fare difference assuming the same fare class is available on the new date?
I know this is slightly complicated as the ticket was booked thru AMEX (aka travel agent) should they call AA directly as its still a “paid” ticket or call AMEX first?

They should waive the change fee, but not the fare difference. Have him call AA and explain the situation ASAP, they should annotate his record so that when he's ready to rebook, the agent will see the note about waiving the change fee.
