With any decent airline (not sure that applies here) you would not cancel the ticket you would change the ticket to drop a segment. For most US airlines you can do a change or cancellation for free within 24 hours of purchasing a ticket. For Lifemiles it is not clear to me whether you could get a free change within 24 hours. You could get a free cancellation if booked from the US but as you mention once a cancellation happens you will not be able to get the segment you want back. You want a change and it is not specified in the Avianca policy whether they would do the change for free within 24 hours which probably means they would not. In which case to get this to work you may have to pay the $150 change fee. It is probably not worth pursuing for most.
When you reserve or purchase a ticket at any sales office, call center or through
Avianca.com in the United States you may
cancel your purchase without a penalty and receive a full refund.
You must meet the following conditions:
- The cancellation must be requested within 24 hours of the purchase.
- The reservation must be made 7 days (or more) prior to the date of the flight.
