I haven't got an OLCI due today so I can't check this, but no, I haven't seen that problem before on purely BA metal. Even on non BA metal there is usually the seat selection screen even if you can't do much with it. So long as you don't choose the boarding pass download / print / email [etc] (as a pop up on the App, as a drop down on the full site) then you can get checked in and then change your seat after check-in, so long as it is not a Basic fare and you are without status.
