Official policy is that you can board together in the lower group (ie, BG1)

As with most UA policies, you'll occasionally find a gate agent who decides to do the exact opposite, but it should be rare.

In locations with automated boarding gates (eg, BOS) you'll need to avoid using them as they will stop the person with the incorrect group from boarding - just go through the lane where they are manually doing them.
