IIRC, you can take the train into A and clear security from the main terminal as well. Though, the lines there can be absolutely miserable.
Correct, I've taken the train car that said 'exit terminal' before leaving S. You can then (this only makes sense if you have Pre-Check) go upstairs, drop your bag there (instead of post-customs) and then go through the Pre-Check line.
