Cologne
Some notes about the new LGW-CGN service to Cologne-Bonn (Köln-Bonn) airport. On paper it's not a good place to transfer since CGN is not on FLY and therefore uses a cut down version of the software at check-in. This means that self printed boarding passes and the App boarding passes don't work. And you can't get staff at LGW to check you in either - you really can't avoid a face to face check-in experience. This sort of thing normally rules a location out for back to back options, and you can not avoid going landside on arrival.
However there is something rather odd about the 2018 schedules. There are flights on Monday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday. Forget Thursday for a moment, but the timetable for the other days involves a turnaround of over 2hours and 20 minutes. Mondays you have a further 10 minutes on top of that. And the schedule is a bit padded, you could easily arrive 10 or 15 minutes early. So much so, that if you dash off the aircraft, through Schengen, out to landside, then up to departures level (best use the lift in the middle of the arrival concourse) - you could easily arrive at check-in a good 15 minutes before it has even opened for business. Check-in opens around desk D10 two hours before departure.
This doesn't apply on Thursdays, that has a more conventional 45 minutes turn around.
Now there are going to be easier places to do a B2B, but it does mean that CGN is an unusual place where you can get BA.com to do a B2B on one ticket and online! It's also a cheap place to visit. So perhaps one for those trying to get their Eligible Flights number up a bit.
Note that though CGN is small, it isn't as efficient as DUS or NRN. Security and departing Schengen has overtones of Frankfurt in terms of tedious processing. And no lounge unless you have a Priority Pass.
