I read this as a tempest in a teapot. You are flying public transportation, it's a bus with wings. Your expectations as to what level of service, professionalism, DYKWIA acknowledgement, etc. should be in line with that. 'Incompetence or lies', no, just a standard foul-up that happens every day to someone, somewhere. Today was your turn that's all.
More to the point, the number of bags which are delivered late is infintesimal and the number of bags which arrive significantly late or never, is even less than that. I

Given generous carry-on allowances, one can easily travel for 4-7 days without checked bags (perhaps longer for some). Certainly, delayed luggage should not be a problem for the first few days unless one has a shampoo one simply can't live without.
