Are you sure that the LAX - TYO leg is actually available for the cabin you are looking for? Not a mixed cabin award? If it's available as a leg of connection it should be available on its own. If you are really seeing this you should call and see what's going on.
That is not my experience at al. Connecting flights come with married segment logic and therefore, availability
