Whether I check depends on the trip, destination and planned activities. While I generally prefer to only carry-on I do not go through silly contortions to avoid checking. I have little interest in packing like a backpacker reliving his youth, emulating a laundress scrubbing underwear in a hotel sink or wasting business or vacation time frantically searching for thrift shops in far-off lands to buy disposal clothing. When I have needed to buy something on the road it was the result of a packing failure because I did not properly anticipate the conditions or neglected to bring a piece of equipment.
Please give us some idea of what you would pack for a 3-12 month trip and what you would use to pack it all in Badenoch. I for one would be interested in hearing what you would do to avoid using a backpack, doing laundry, etc.
Not everyone simply vacations at one hotel in one place or even in several hotels in major cities. Comments like you made seem to think everyone is a boring tourist doing the usual things as you apparently must do. Try telling me what you would pack and in what, even for a 3 week walk across the Alps from France to Italy.
