I have a similar experience. Booked flight end of Jan 19 and upgrade availability was given (5+ seats). My partner was supposed to do the upgrade using vouchers but forgot. One day later, there was suddenly no upgrade availability given anymore. Did a dummy booking and saw 24 out of 24 empty J seats. Why, AY?
The reason being that AY has never promised to open upgrade space on any flight.
Currently they are more concentrated to collect more ancillary revenue from paid upgrades than co-ordinating upgrades for their loyalty customers.
AY is missing a business process to control upgrade availability and IF they opened up eq. 20 seats on an empty flight the yield statistics may deteriorate.
OTOH all my
zero availability upgrade requests have cleared within days, and even months ahead.
